What is the purpose of Red Sea Wind Energy S.A.E.?

Red Sea Wind Energy S.A.E. was founded to construct and operate a greenfield wind-farm project on the Gulf of Suez in Egypt. The project — initially developed at 500 MW and later expanded to 650 MW — is a joint effort between ENGIE (France), Toyota Tsusho Corporation and Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation (Japan), and Orascom Construction (Egypt).

How much energy will the wind farm produce?

Given the site’s favourable wind conditions, the wind farm is expected to achieve a capacity factor of around 55%. Annual generation is approximately 2 TWh of clean electricity — enough to power roughly 800,000 Egyptian homes.

What is the expected timeline for this project?

The project’s initial development phase commenced in 2017, with financial close achieved in the first quarter of 2023. The wind farm reached its first Commercial Operation Date (COD) in December 2024 and was fully commissioned ahead of schedule.

Who are the key stakeholders in this project?

Our stakeholders include the joint-venture partners (ENGIE, Orascom Construction, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and Eurus Energy Holdings), the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) as the off-taker, and our financing partners. Our partners for wind turbines, civil works, and electrical systems include Goldwind and Orascom Construction.
